Rewards of Service

25 November

I got involved with the LoServicendon Colleges in the early 1990s and contributed to a panel that was trying to find ways of meeting the requirements of employers. It was interesting to be a part of the changes in educating future hotel employees and I valued the experience.
Because of my willingness
to help I was approached by an American college based in Ohio about international student experience. They came for an inspection and we were instant friends and eventually we managed to make something happen. A year later I got a call from their office inviting me on an all expenses paid trip to Hocking Collage as a Key Note Speaker on hospitality. I didn’t think I could do it but they persuaded me I could. It was due just before Thanksgiving and so they invited me to stay for the week to include the celebration.
I must have drank several bottles of rescue remedy! I got help with delivery from two actor friends. I slaved over the two topics, one being my own story! I got upgraded to Business Class which helped!
The experience was truly amazing, talking to over 200 students that were all avidly listening! It was for me a fabulous day.
Apart from the speech I was collected each day by a different staff member and taken out to see their favourite part of the state, we visited The Amish, The Biggest Basket factory in the world and other quirky places and I was very touched by their thoughtfulness.
The highlight for me though was being invited by the Dean to have Thanksgiving Dinner cooked by the hospitality students at his house with an amazingly diverse group of guests. I loved every minute.
I guess the moral of my story is that unexpected fabulous opportunity presents itself as a result of service, every single time. Sometimes it’s bigger and sometimes it’s so small you might miss it, but it’s there all the same! I love being a server.
